Sunglasses Kid features on Beverly Hills Cop 4 with Lorne Balfe and Tim Cappello

I was lucky enough to work with Lorne Balfe on the soundtrack to Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the Netflix movie coming out July 3rd.

Alongside some cues in the score itself, I programmed synths for the song 'Axel's Return' that plays over the credits of the movie, taking the 80s vibes to the max with Tim Cappello, the cult saxophone player best known for his small but iconic role in the movie The Lost Boys, as well as playing on the soundtrack of movies like Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, and touring with Tina Turner throughout the 90s, to name a few awesome things Tim has done.

The track was composed by Hollywood A-Lister Lorne Balfe (Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning, Top Gun Maverick), and my job was to take his composition and make it 80s.

In an interview for Forbes Lorne said,

"Sunglasses Kid is about the present, but it's also about this ability to try to help and find new talent. The internet is an amazing thing. I was near the end of the score when a friend sent me a link to his work, and I was blown away. We just spent a year and a half trying to figure this out, but I could have watched his videos, and it would have been far easier."

In an interview for The Wrap Balfe added,

“A friend of mine sent me a link and said, ‘You’ll like this,’” Balfe recalled. “That was like, Oh. That’s actually a clever idea here. He’s being faithful to the past but he’s doing something new.”

Axel F director Mark Molloy added,

“I remember listening to [Sunglasses Kid] and thinking, this is new, but I feel like it could be in ‘Beverly Hills Cop.”

You can listen or buy Axel's Return on all major streaming platforms and digital stores, including Spotify and Apple Music.
