Sad and shocking news. Kavinsky has died in his home in France.

You can't mention synthwave and not mention Kavinsky, whose song Night Call is responsible for inspiring hundreds of producers, including me, to make electronic music with an 80s vibe - whether that's synthwave, darkwave, outrun, new retro, or whatever you call what I do - we've all stood on the shoulders of Kavinsky.

I never met Kavinsky but had the pleasure of playing alongside College and would count the Drive soundtrack as one of the main reasons I started Sunglasses Kid. That soundtrack was a special moment in music and movie history and it really lit the blue touch paper for an incredible decade of electronic music and underground Internet culture that spilled into the real world with gigs, parties and real people coming together.

Kavinsky's cultural legacy and role in starting not just a new genre, but an aesthetic and movement that has influenced mainstream pop culture, video games and movies will stand as a lasting tribute to this much loved artist.

A very sad day for his family, friends, fans and musicians who followed in his footsteps.
